11 Types of Bread Recipes to Try Today

When you first think of a fresh loaf, plain white bread might spring to mind, or perhaps you think about crusty baguette. But there are various types of dough and loaves for bakers to experiment with. Here are the best bread recipes for any occasion, from breakfast to dinner.

Vegan Bread Recipes

Gluten-free and Vegan Flatbreads

Flatbreads are one of our go-to recipes when we’re short on time. They’re also perfect for making bread without yeast. This gluten-free bread recipe, which uses quinoa and brown rice flour, requires fewer bread elements than your typical loaf, making it a quick and easy one to make. It’s ideal for mopping up your favourite curry sauce, too!

Artisan Spelt Bread Recipe

If you’re planning a chilled night in, try this garlic bread pizza. The base is made with white spelt flour, quick-acting yeast, olive oil and maple syrup. Top it with a creamy, homemade cashew cheese sauce, fresh cherry tomatoes, capers and rocket leaves. It’s also the perfect addition to a brunch spread.

Whole Wheat Bread Recipe

This vegan soda bread can be made with spelt, rye or wholemeal bread flour, and is wonderfully easy to make.

Simply combine all of the dry ingredients, which includes baking soda, spices like cumin seeds and chopped nuts. The wet ingredients include apple cider vinegar and plant-based yoghurt, which curdle to achieve the desired flavour and texture that soda bread is so well-known for. Sprinkle with oats before baking to obtain a crispy crust.

Artisan Bread Recipes

Ciabatta Bread Recipe

This Allinson bread recipe will have you whipping up perfect loaves of ciabatta in no time! And there’s nothing like homemade, fresh bread to create the ultimate sandwich.

Ciabatta is a traditional Italian bread that tends to be broad and flat, and contains lots of holes, making it lovely and light. You don’t need a breadmaker either as you can simply knead the dough by hand.

Panini Bread

We love making this sandwich during the summer months, as it summons up flavours of the Mediterranean. The filling is also a great spin on the typical Caprese combo of tomato and mozzarella.

You can use ciabatta or baguette to make the sandwich, which is filled with vegetarian-friendly halloumi cheese, pesto, roasted peppers and fresh lettuce or rocket leaves.

Gluten-Free Bread Recipe

This loaf is certainly not your conventional recipe, but it’s ideal for those with a gluten intolerance. It’s also a zero-waste recipe as you can use up leftover cauliflower stalks!

The veg is blended with gluten-free brown bread flour and psyllium husks. The addition of linseeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds makes this recipe a more nutritional option, too.

Cheesy Mushroom Tiger Bread

This tear-and-share bread is ideal for big family meals, or to enjoy with friends over brunch at home. A gourmet take on mushrooms on toast, the recipe is quick and easy to make.

Simply sauté a mixture of mushrooms and garlic, before scooping it on top of the tiger bread. Add grated vegetarian-friendly Cheddar cheese and spring onions, then place in a preheated oven to bake until the cheese melts. This is comfort food at its best!

Potato Bread

Spuds may not be the first thing to come to mind when thinking about bread, but it’s surprisingly easy to make and comforting to eat! This bread dough combines potatoes and white bread flour with butter, sugar, warm water and instant yeast.

The addition of vegetarian Parmesan-style cheese, fresh thyme and onion adds a fragrant twist. This crusty bread recipe is the perfect accompaniment to a hearty bowl of soup.

Sweet Bread Recipes

Tea Bread Recipe

This moist loaf is the perfect treat to enjoy with your favourite cuppa. Bramley apples and Muscovado sugar add a lovely depth of flavour, while the addition of sultanas, apple juice and mixed spice make for a rich loaf.

This recipe requires just 15 minutes of rise time, before being baked for about 45 minutes. Serve with a thin layer of olive oil spread, and store in a bread tin or airtight container.

Banana Bread Muffins

Up your banana bread game with these sugar-free banana bread muffins. The batter is made from gluten-free oats and buckwheat flour. The sweetness comes from rice syrup and mashed bananas, so there’s no need for added sugar.

You can use fresh or frozen blueberries, and we think raisins or dates would be a lovely addition, too! After pouring the batter into the muffin tin, you could even pop a few walnuts on top for a bit of crunch. If you’re looking for a healthy banana bread recipe, you could easily pour the batter into a loaf tin for a delicious vegan banana bread recipe that the whole family will love.

Agave Chocolate Orange Bread Pudding

This rich recipe gives the classic British dessert a wonderfully indulgent twist. You can use any type of light bread, such as brioche, panettone, or fruit bread here. This recipe is also a great way of using up leftover bread so it doesn’t go to waste.

Slices of orange and chunks of dark chocolate are layered into a baking dish along with the sliced bread and butter. A mixture of eggs, milk and cream is then whipped up with agave syrup and vanilla, and poured over the bread. The dish needs to stand for about 30 minutes before being baked for another 30 minutes, so be sure to plan ahead. Serve with extra orange zest and tuck in!
