Go Greek and Vegan at The Athenian
Find out what deputy editor, Sian thought when she ventured out to Boxpark Shoreditch to try the latest vegan and veggie items on the menu...
Amongst the pop-ups at Boxpark, The Athenian grabs your attention with its variety of fast food and Mediterranean-inspired wraps, known as souvlaki. This year, the street-food outlet has created vegan versions of these classic wraps, such as the tomato croquette souvlaki and grilled mushroom souvlaki, so I was spoiled for choice on which one to try, along with delicious vegetarian and vegan sides.
First up, I tried a seitan souvlaki – this perfectly imitated a meaty texture, with a heft of red onions, tomatoes, avocado and vegan mayo, which added zesty savoury flavours. It was filled to the brim – so if you’re in need of a quick, filling bite to eat, you definitely won’t go hungry! Alongside this souvlaki, I dived into a basket of moreish courgette fritters – the soft filling was lightly spiced, and had a crunchy coating that kept me coming back for more.
For a veggie-friendly side, you can’t go wrong with the halloumi fries with vegan mayo, which was just as piquant as the regular version. As you can tell, for review purposes I tried as many dishes as I could without feeling too greedy – so I can say with complete confidence that a souvlaki and two sides is more than enough for one person. The service was fast at 5pm on a weeknight; though I am told that there can be a queue at lunchtimes.
This was fast, convenient, tasty veggie and vegan food which served as a great addition to the existing menu at The Athenian. Bring all your non-veggie and non-vegan friends, too… but give them the challenge of trying your meat-free choices. They won’t regret it, but you might – the dishes are so tasty, they could end up eating everything!
The Athenian also has venues in White City, Victoria, Tooting, and Canary Wharf, so choose your favourite district and go for Greek!
